Iraq War

IRAQ WAR, often referred to as Operation Iraqi Freedom began March 20, 2003 and “officially” ended on December 18, 2011.  Its purposes like all wars became increasing multi-purpose.  Initially, it was to eliminate that government’s nuclear and chemical warfare capabilities.  It also resulted in the liberation of the Iraqi people from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.  It involved a multi-national force of more than 40 counties with the vast bulk of responsibility falling on the shoulders of U.S. soldiers and sailors.  The invasion force reached more than 300,000 at its maximum.  American fatalities were 4,487 with 32,236 wounded.
