Battle of Kettle Hill/San Juan Hill was fought on July 1, 1898. It made Theodore Roosevelt a national hero with the famous charge of the "Rough Riders". Almost one hundred years later Roosevelt would be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on that day. Contrary to popular belief, Roosevelt was not the leader of the Rough Riders, but rather it was Colonel Leonard Wood. In turn, Wood's commanding officer was General Joseph Wheeler of Civil War fame. Wheeler had volunteered for service in the Spanish-American War. He believed that the war provided a rare and important opportunity for former confederate soldiers to show their patriotic support for The United States.
