Operation Market Time was principally conducted by The United States Navy with additional involvement by The United States Coast Guard, and The Marines. It lasted from shortly after February, 1965 until the war’s conclusion. One of four major naval operations during the war, it was designed to stop the transport of troops and supplies via sea lanes from North Vietnam to the South. P5M Seaplane Patrol squadrons, Navy Destroyers, Navy Patrol Gunboats, Minesweepers, PCFs (swift boats) and Coast Guard Cutters conducted much of the operation. For 8 ½ years, under all weather conditions, day and night, they successfully denied access to North Vietnam by the sea.
