Gulf Air War Campaign began January 17, 1991 with an aerial bombardment with more than 100,000 sorties under the command of USAF General Chuck Horner. They dropped more than 88,000 tons of bombs. The objective was to destroy Iraqi Air Forces and anti aircraft facilities. The third and largest phase of the air campaign targeted Iraqi military installations in both Kuwait and Iraq. The entire operation was mostly launched from the six aircraft carrier battle groups in the Gulf and the Red Sea and a few were within Saudi Arabia.
